Biography - Jazz Guitarist Frank Singer
|
|
Frank Singer performs jazz music in and around Erie Pennsylvania. His solo style has been compared to Joe Pass, and the influence of Wes Montgomery is clear in his playing. In addition to solo guitar, he plays in Cat's A Bear, One World Tribe, and J.D. and the Sons of Rhythm, where he also performs on keyboards and synth-guitar. His current jazz release is oFF tHE tOP: standards 1, 12 jazz standards on solo guitar. The solo jazz guitar album was recorded and released as an independent project by the artist, who recorded, mastered, manufactured, packaged and released the CD with his own in-home production company, First Art Records. Newly released is his classical composition Generations String Quartet, where the viola is replaced with electric jazz-style guitar. Generations was commissioned by Gannon University for the Erie Pennsylvania Bicentennial celebration in 1995-6. Hearing the John McLaughlin album Birds of Fire inspired Singer to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he recieved a degree in 20th-century classical composition (Magna Cum Laude). He then studied jazz guitar and piano with Charlie Banacos, meeting Mike Stern as their paths crossed between lessons. This led to a recent tune Sternly, inspired by the title track of Mike's album Play. Frank's original song Unity and Diversity, title track of One World Tribe's first CD, was awarded the 1999 John Lennon Song Contest Finalist in the World Music Category. Unity and Diversity is scheduled to be included in an upcoming Green Party fund-raising CD. Frank continues to perform, record, and compose for various projects.
